World Gazetteer Product Overview

World Gazetteer: 2.8 million global cities database with latitude and longitude coordinates on CD-ROM - contains World Gazetteer data.

World Gazetteer is an alphabetical listing of place names, political divisions, and physical features of the Earth. World Gazetteer entries include such items as cities, countries, rivers, and mountains and give some descriptive or statistical information about each item.

World Gazetteer sample data, World Gazetteer downloads, and World Gazetteer datasets available online.

World Gazetteer - the term World Gazetteer originally was applied to one who wrote a gazette. World Gazetteer was first used in its modern sense early in the 18th century, after the publication (1703) by Lawrence Echard of the Gazetteer's or Newsman's Interpreter, a geographical index.

Our gazetteers include the global coordinates of each item in latitude and longitude degrees. World Gazetteer list includes places where people live and work such as cities, towns, and villages.

Geography
Whereas the focus of cultural geography is more on traditional societies (though it is not restricted to them), social geography is more oriented toward urban problems in countries with advanced economies. Social geographers have been concerned particularly with the spatial aspects of disadvantaged groups (such as minorities, women, the aged, and the poor), of such social pathologies as crime and mental illness, and of inequality, social welfare, and housing.

*Lat/Lon coordinates are approximate. They have been read from sources that vary in scale and in geodetic quality. These coordinates may be used only to approximately locate features on medium and large-scale maps. Coordinates have been read at the map symbol for populated places, point features, and features occupying limited extent. Coordinates for linear features such as rivers also include pairs of source coordinates taken at their mouths or lower reaches. Locations of areal features are represented by the coordinates of their approximate center.

Now you can provide your users with standardized lists of choices for entering data. For example, without a comprehensive list of cities, user-input location data quickly becomes a nightmare. Assuming your users make no spelling errors you can expect the user-provided location data to vary greatly. Just consider:

New York, New York USA
New York, NY USA
N.Y., N.Y. US
And the list goes on!

These are all "valid" entries which represent the same physical location, but from the database standpoint these are all separate and distinct locations. Using our World-wide Cities database this problem is eliminated! Users can be presented with a standard and complete version of any place name, thus producing a more reliable and meaningful dataset.

Currently in service with hundreds of thousands of users worldwide, our database products are compatible with SQL Server, Oracle, Access, MySQL and
