Product Features: Entries include the officially recognized name for the feature as well as any variant spellings; the region and country in which the feature is located; and the geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) in decimal degrees that locate the approximate center of an aerial feature or the source of a linear feature. FIPS – Federal Information Processing Standard
Under the Information Technology Management Reform Act (Public Law 104-106), the Secretary of Commerce approves standards and guidelines that are developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for Federal computer systems. These standards and guidelines are issued by NIST as Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) for use government-wide. NIST develops FIPS when there are compelling Federal government requirements such as for security and interoperability and there are no acceptable industry standards or solutions.

This product is a database of feature items. Entries include information such as the recognized name for the feature; the country and administrative division in which each named feature is located; and the geographic coordinates that locate the approximate center of an areal feature or the source of a linear feature. Other data such as elevation, population, descriptive information, etc. are provided where available.

The data is easily imported into the majority of database applications available today such as SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, MS Access, dBase, Paradox, FoxPro, and others. Because the
